Pride Month has arrived, which invariably entails an ardent escalation in ecstatic posts about Los Angeles’s Cooper Donuts, and its famed 1950s riot, the first-ever LGBTQ+ uprising in American history.
As you may know, I debunked the tale at some length. Despite that, the City of Los Angeles decided to make Second & Main “Cooper Do-Nuts/Nancy Valverde Square” because City Council thought it more fun to listen to fact-challenged folk make impassioned history-denying entreaties rather than consider, you know, actual history.
All my debunking was done over the course of five separate blog posts, so, I’ve distilled the salient points of Cooper/Valverde Debunking into one handy-dandy essay. Actually, it’s more of a one-act play, modeled after My Dinner with Andre, a concept I know fills you with both dread and curiosity.
